► (Refer to Jeppesen Training Route Manual - chart E(HI)1 )
An aircraft has to fly from the airport at Aberdeen (57°19minN 002°16minW) to the airport at Benbecula (57°29minN 007°22minW), Given:

Time to climb: 11 min
Time to descend: 15 min
Cruise TAS: 210 kt

Assuming the aircraft reaches top of climb when crossing 3°W and starts a descent to overhead Benbecula when crossing 6°W, what is the planned flight time in still air from take-off to overhead?

Answer: 54 min

1) Find and open Chart E(HI)1 and locate the 2 airports

Route A->B = 165 NM (stated on the chart)

We have to find the time (and therefore first the distance) between the longitudes 3W and 6W. To measure the NM distance between these, first create a scale;

- Measure the total length of the route = 21 cm
- Thus 21cm equals 165NM
- Meaning that 1cm = approx 8NM

Now measure the distance between 3W and 6W (= 12,5cm)
12,5 x 8 = 100 NM

T = D / V
T = 100NM / 210kt
T = 28 minutes

NOTE: Do not forget to add the time for climb and descent to this! (There will be a possible answer 28min)

28min + 11min + 15min = 54 minutes

An aircraft has to fly from the airport at Aberdeen (57°19minN 002°16minW) to the airport at Benbecula (57°29minN 007°22minW), Given:

Time to climb: 11 min
Time to descend: 9 min
TAS: 170 kt
W/V: 230/50

What is the flight time during the cruise?

Answer: 54 min

1) Find and open the chart E HI 1 and locate the 2 airports

Distance A->B = 165NM
Magnetic Course = 281°

2) Find Ground speed

TAS = 170kt
Magnetic Course = 281° -8°W (VAR dotted line found between the 2 airports) = 273° True Course

Wind direction (230) - True Course (273) = -43
COS(-43) = 0.73 (Positive value so HWC)
0.73 x windspeed (50) = 37kt HWC

170kt - 37kt = 133kt Ground speed

3) Find time

T = D / V
T = 165NM / 133kt
T = 01:14

We were asked the time in cruise so subtract time for climb and descent:

01:14 - 00:11 - 00:09 = 00:54
