Cockpit Voice Recorder

EU-OPS requires the carriage of a CVR. They are required to switch on automatically prior to the aeroplane first moving under its own power, and continue to record until termination of the flight. It will record;

- Voice communications going into or out of the cockpit
- Aural environment on the flight deck
- Intercom
- Voice/audio identification of navigation or approach aids (in headset or on speaker)
- Flight crew members using PA (public address) system

Case 1:

- Aeroplanes with CoA issued on 1st April 1998 or later
- At least the last 2 hours of its operation

Case 2:

- Aeroplanes with CoA issued before 1st April 1998
- At least the last 30 minutes of its operation




Flight Data Recorder

Also known as "the black box", they are required to be capable of recording data relating to the operation of the aeroplane systems, control positions and performance parameters.

- Capable of retaining the data recorded during at least the last 25 hours of its operation
- Can be reduced to 10 hours for aeroplanes with MCTOM of 5700kg or less
