Distress and Urgency

Urgency = Concern for the safety of other aircraft, vessel, vehicle or person but immediate assistance is not required

Emergency

Alterting Service

Provided to aircraft in distress and carried out by ATC or FIS. Search and Rescue services will be alerted if needed.

The control or FIC defines the necessary phase of emergency based on the information currently present and alerts the responsible SAR control center. The SAR control center then organises its activities according to the current alert plans.

Phases of emergency;

1. INCERFA (uncertainty phase)

"Situation wherein uncertainty exists as to the safety of an aircraft and its occupants"

2. ALERFA (alert phase)

"Situation wherein apprehension exists as to the safety of an aircraft and its occupants"

3. DETRESFA (distress phase)

"Situation wherein there is reasonable certainty that an aircraft and its occupants are threatened by grave and imminent danger and require immediate assistance"

Distress traffic

A controller or the distress traffic itself can ask for radio silence as to not interfere on the frequency. Once the emergency is solved, normal operations can continue with the phrase "DISTRESS TRAFFIC ENDED".

Everyone knowing about a distress situation, but being unable to provide assistance themselves should monitor the frequency at least until it is certain that assistance is being provided.

A distress message shall at least consists of;

- Aircraft call sign
- Nature of distress
- Intentions of the pilot
- Present position, level and heading
- ...
