SAR Services

Contracting states shall provide SAR services within their territories (24h basis).

Contracting states shall assist aircraft in distress and survivors of accidents regardless of the nationality of such aircraft or survivors.

SAR services will be provided within SAR regions. In each region, a rescue co- ordination centre (RCC) shall be established. Whenever it would improve the efficiency, rescue sub-centres (RSC) will be provided.

A rescue unit = A unit composed of trained personnel and provided with equipment suitable for the expeditious conduct of SAR.

Co-operation between states

COSPAS-SARSAT = A SAR satellite-aided tracking system linking major airports

Operating procedures

The first aircraft to reach the scene of an accident (not being a SAR aircraft), shall take charge of on-scene activities of all other aircraft subsequently arriving until the first SAR aircraft arrives.

If the first aircraft cannot establish communication with the appropriate units, it shall hand over its task to an other aircraft who is capable in doing so.

When you intercept a distress signal and/or message;

1: Record the position of the craft in distress (if given);
2: If possible take a bearing of the transmission;
3: Inform the appropriate RCC or ASS
